The early life of Jerry Lee Lewis

He was born in Louisiana and grew up in an impoverished farming family in Eastern Louisiana.

He played piano with his two cousins, Jimmy Swaggart and Mickey Gilley and he was so obsessed with music, especially piano, that his father bought a piano for him by mortgaging his farm.

Lewis had made his first public appearance of his career at a car dealership with a country and western band.

His mother enrolled him at the Southwest Bible Institute in Texas so that he could sing songs of evangelical exclusively.

About his Career

his first recording was recorded in 1952 in the J&M studio of Cosimo Matassa, in Louisiana. He covered ‘Don’t stay away and his instrumental composition which is called ‘Jerry’s Boogie.

Lewis’s singles advanced his career as a soloist in 1957, songs of that time that hit the music industry were ‘Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On’, ‘Great Balls of Fire and a Big Maybelle. These songs were his biggest hit, bringing him international fame and criticism of the songs, which led and triggered some radio stations to ban and boycott them.

During his tour, a reporter discovered about his 3rd wife, Myra Gale Brown, according to the reports she was the first cousin of Lewis and she was married at the age of 13 years old on that time, Lewis was 22 years old, claiming she is 15 years old.

As this news leaked in London, the newspaper highlighted this news as ‘Fans Aghast at Child Bride’.

This revelation caused a public uproar and soon after that, his tour was canceled.

According to media reports, Lewis has been married 7 times and his last and seventh wife was Judith, who was by his side when he died.
